GQ Talented Development Programs

We are regularly asked how players may get to participate in our Talented Development Programs and the following details have been created to give those young players and parents aspiring to represent their State, an understanding of how the Golf Queensland selects its State Squads and subsequently State Teams.

Some of the key changes putin place in the new model were:

  • Two squads (21 & Under and Under 18) will be in training under the one program
  • The Program will have talented players in training year round.
  • The emphasis of the Program is on the development of the players' golf skills with a special emphasis on the short game and on personal development.
  • Coaching sessions will be delivered by a panel of coaches, with specialist skills, who will liaise with the player's primary coaches.
  • Specialist support staff will also work with the Squads
  • Playing programs will be set by the GQ High Performance Committee, Selectors and Golf Operations Department

The development squads are picked using the following criteria:

  • Angus Buchanan (AB) and Bill Kennedy (WK) averages are a primary (but not sole) consideration. You should make sure you are entered - a copy of the entry form is available from the GQ office and website.
  • GQ has managers and coaches at events to look at players in action under tournament conditions. Players should try to contest major GQ events such as the relevant State Championships to showcase their skills against the best fields possible.
  • The new junior development squad members normally must have at least 2 years left as a junior in April the following year.
  • Some younger players i.e. 13-14 years olds are given special consideration if selectors believe they have exceptional potential to become talented players.
  • Players may move in and out of the squads as the players, coaches and selectors determine what is best for the player and the program.
Players may be selected in the older squad without having participated in the Under 18 program. For more information on selections, download the "How do I get Selected" document listed below.
